Today, our laptops are our constant companions. They do a lot of the heavy lifting in our daily lives. They work, shop, and play as hard as we do. With all this use, the sleek look isn't the only thing that's compromised when dirt, dust, and grime build up. The life of your technological workhorse can be seriously shortened if it isn't given the care and maintenance it deserves. Here is a down and clean article on how to give this essential device the care it needs without damaging it in the process. Let's get to it!
Gather Your Cleaning Supplies
Before you give your laptop an old-fashioned scrubbing, make sure to unplug it and power it down completely. We'll be using liquids in the cleaning process and as you know, liquids and electricity do not mix. Here are a few supplies you will need to have on hand:
- Soft Lint-Free Cloths
- Clean Water
- Clean Bowl?
- Mild Dish Soap
- Canned Compressed Air
- Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol
- A Soft Brush
Now, just follow these steps to bring your device back to its former glory.
Step 1: The Exterior Wipe Down
Begin by filling your clean bowl with a few cups of warm water. Then, add a few drops of dish soap and give it a gentle stir. Once suds have formed at the surface of the water, dip your lint-free cloth into the solution and submerge it completely. Remove the cloth from the suds and ring it out until it's damp, not soaked. Using one hand to hold your device, give its exterior a complete wipe down with the damp cloth. Once complete, rinse the cloth under the tap and give your computer's exterior another wipe down. Follow up with a dry cloth to remove any remaining residue and ensure there's no leftover moisture that could harm your device.
Step 2: The Interior Wipe Down
Now, it's time to tackle two areas that probably need some serious attention, your laptop's interior display and keyboard. For the display, spritz some of your alcohol-free LCD cleaning solution on a clean lint-free cloth. Then, starting from one corner of your screen, wipe it down completely until all grease and grime are eliminated. Refrain from using any other type of cleaning agents to clean your display. Some cleaning agents, like dish soap, can remove your LCD's protective outer coating.
For the keyboard, use your can of compressed air to blast away any hair, lint, crumbs and other debris from underneath the keys. Then, dab a lint-free cloth with isopropyl alcohol and wipe down the keys thoroughly. Isopropyl alcohol that's at least 95% alcohol is the perfect cleaning agent to use for this highly sensitive area because it evaporates quickly. This is also a great way to routinely disinfect your keyboard.
Step 3: The Nooks And Crannies
After the interior and exterior of your laptop have been given the royal treatment, it's a good idea to get any lint, dust and grime out of your charging ports, vents and the like. To do this, simply use your soft brush to free up any visible debris and use your Q-tip® to get into the tighter nooks and crannies. This process will ensure good peripheral connections and will prolong the life of your system.
